The other night I picked up a 4-pack of a new release from Alaskan Brewing Company called Alaskan Hopothermia. Hopothermia is a Imperial India Pale Ale with 8.5% Alcohol By Volume, and will be available as a part of their year-round lineup.
Alaskan Hopothermia is a copper colored beer, shining a clear, deep amber when held up to a light. A medium sized, pillowy, cream colored head tops it off, with a ring of lacing remaining behind after each sip.
The nose has a bit of bready pale malt, but is mainly focused on a bright hop presentation, with plenty of tropical fruit, citrus, floral and grapefruit notes.
Bready and lightly toasted malts start things off in the taste, neutral yeast imparting hints of lighter fruits, with the hops taking center stage. Starting floral, lots of tropical fruit and grapefruit, with a touch of piney resin in the finish. The mouth is fairly full bodied and actively carbonated.
My pack of Alaskan Hopothermia didn’t last too long, and I had to make sure to save a bottle to get this review up. Sporting lots of juicy hop flavors, while maintaining enough of a malt base to keep things somewhat balanced, Hopothermia is sure to please anyone looking for their next hop fix.
