Ballast Point Brewing Company is one of the breweries that I have really come to enjoy, and tonight I will be checking out a beer from them called Ballast Point Tongue Buckler. Tongue Buckler is an Imperial Red Ale with 10% Alcohol By Volume, and is available in 22 oz. bottles.
Ballast Point Tongue Buckler is a crystal clear, brown colored beer, shining an orange when held up to a light. A large tan head tops it off, with a woven pattern of lacing clinging to the glass.
The nose has plenty of resinous hops, alcohol, and an underlying caramel malt.
Sweet caramel malts start things off in the taste, hints of lighter fruit notes in the transition, with a load of hops rounding things out. Plenty of resinous and piney hops, with lots of fresh citrus and grapefruit and floral notes backing it up. Alcohol spice is noticeable. The mouth is fairly full bodied and with a fair amount of carbonation.
The label of Ballast Point Tongue Buckler says that it ”doesn’t pull and punches,” and I would concur with that assessment. Hop Heads will enjoy it, and the darker malts shakes things up a bit from your run of the mill IIPA. Tongue Buckler is another solid entry in a very fine line of beers from Ballast Point Brewing Company.
