Drinkology Beer: A Book About the Brew

So a guy or a gal walks into a bar and orders a . . . what? A Belgian lambic? A German Hefeweizen? An American barley wine? Today, with thousands of beers being made in the U.S. and many, many imported ales and lagers available at taverns and retailers, the once-simple decision to have a beer may feel a little like drowning. Drinkology Beer to the rescue. James Waller’s new book is written especially for beer lovers who have no idea what “sparge” or “IBU” might mean. After covering the

All of my friends have become beer snobs. They’ve taken to discussing the subtleties of different types of beer, different brewing techniques, etc. – good for them and all but I was, unfortunately, a little out of my element. Instead of sitting there, clueless, I took it upon myself to learn exactly what they were talking about. A little bit of internet research later and I found Drinkology, and there’s been no going back.

Now when I look at a beer menu I can understand all of the differentiations between types of beer and what all of those pesky abbreviations stand for. I’m not a beer snob myself, but, now I can at least participate in the conversations. Another plus is that I better understand what goes into the types of beers that I enjoy and I can quickly pick out new beers to try when I’m feeling adventurous.

The book is written perfectly. The language is accessible and informative without being dry. If you want to learn to pick good beer or get in on the craft beer craze, I highly recommend picking this up. In addition, for those not into beer, his other books, Drinkology: Revised and Updated: The Art and Science of the Cocktail, Drinkology: Wine: A Guide to the Grape and Drinkology Eats: A Guide to Bar Food and Cocktail Party Fare are also awesome. They look especially great next to each other on my shelf :D

I received Drinkology Beer: A Book About the Brew on 9/17/11. With much anticipation, I immediately cracked it open and began to read. I found it to be not only educational, but also very funny. Being a beer nut, I enjoyed the humorous stories within. I especially enjoyed two short stories from Tony Moore because of their local roots and talking about places that I too frequent. His first is about the Harrisburg Brewer’s Festival. A hysterically, pee-your-pants funny piece about an event that I love to attend and have had similar experiences as the writer. Second, his story about his first experience trying to homebrew with his friend “Fowler”. Moore has a way of drawing you into the story as if you are right there stumbling along with them.
If you love beer and like great beer stories or if you just want to learn more about beer, this is a great read!
