The beers of Green Flash Brewing Company have been quite enjoyable to check out since they recently arrived on shelves here in Minnesota, and tonight I will be checking out their American Black Ale called Green Flash Black IPA. Their Black IPA is part of the Hop Odyssey series, which features limited releases chalked full of hops.
Green Flash Black IPA is a black bodied beer, glowing a dim brown when held up to a light source. A large tan head tops it off, trailing quite a bit of lacing as the beer is consumed.
The nose is loaded down with hop aromas, lots of floral and citrus notes, with hints of tropical fruit as well. Some underlying black malts.
The black malts pick up a bit of strength in the taste, minimal roast, providing a nice base for the hop presentation, some underlying bitterness with lots of fruity and floral notes in the citrus and tropical fruit range. Clean yeast provides minimal esters. The mouth is medium bodied and fairly actively carbonated.
I have been thoroughly enjoying the beers from Green Flash Brewing Company since they landed here in Minnesota last year, and Black IPA is another nice installment of their very hoppy line of beers. The malt presentation is pretty straightforward, allowing the Cascade and Citra hops to take a fruity center stage. Worth a check for any fan of Black IPAs.
