Black Rock Gear, is a great little cottage gear manufacturer on the outdoor scene that specializes in making ultralight down clothing
Their flagship product is the Ultimate Down Hat
made with 900 fill power down. This makes them really warm and really lightweight, weighing under an once.
Down has all the qualities I’m looking for in a piece of gear: it’s lightweight, warm and has an excellent temperature range. It’s a sustainable insulation compared to synthetics, can be worn in sub zero tempatures and overall very compressible.
I’ve been using one of Evan’s hats for a five months now, i started to wear it under my helmet when i go biking in the cold days of a New hampshire Fall, and have taken it Snowshowing everytime. I even use it snowblowing or just in general being outside for any length of time. It is so lightweight and compressible that you barely realize that you are carrying it, or even wearing it.
The hat has a built-in headband made out of Dry-tec which wicks any sweat off of your head. The hat’s shell is made out of Momentum-MR 90, which comes with a high quality DWR treatment and is the stuff you find on a lot of higher-end sleeping bags.
Selling for only $49: The Ultimate Down Hat also comes in royal blue, agean blue (darker), beige, red, grey green, and black.
