Tonight I will be checking out a beer from Lagunitas Brewing Company that I haven’t had for a while; a winter seasonal American Strong Ale called Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball. Hairy Eyeball is available each year in November, and is sold in kegs and bombers.
Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball is a brown colored beer, glowing a clear, deep ruby red when held up to a light. A small but durable khaki colored head floats atop, with a thick sheet of lacing clinging to the glass.
The nose is pretty centered on caramel and brown malts, toasted, with hints of chocolate as well.
The caramel malts start things off in the taste, accented with brown malts, a hint of chocolate, subtle fruity esters, with some earthy and bitter hops rounding things out. Alcohol provides just a hint of spice in the background. The mouth is a bit fuller than medium bodied with a sweet finish.
The nice mixture of malts in Laguintas Hairy Eyeball is hitting the spot on this cold winter’s night. It isn’t overly complex, but provides a nice sipper to close out the evening. Worth checking out.
