It has been a little while since I have picked up anything from Lagunitas Brewing Company, so the other day I picked up a couple of beers from them. Tonight I will be cracking open Lagunitas Imperial Stout, which is an American Imperial Stout with 9.9% Alcohol By Volume.
Lagunitas Imperial Stout is a pitch black colored beer, glowing a dim mahogany only at the very bottom of the glass. A durable, medium-sized brown colored head floats atop, leaving behind a nice trail of lacing.
The nose does have some citrus hops poking through, but is mainly focused on a smooth black and chocolate malt presentation.
Lots of fruity esters emerge in the taste, plum, cherry with hints of berries, following a smooth black and caramel malt start, minimal roast, with citrus and floral hops closing things out. Elevated alcohol provides a bit of spice, but overall is well blended.
Lagunitas Imperial Stout isn’t as complex as some of the leading Imperial Stouts, but it is a nicely crafted, drinkable beer. Worth checking out for the price, just don’t go into expecting to be blown away.
