Lagunitas Sucks is one of the more popular, widely-distributed Double IPAs that comes around each year, being released in late November and December. It was originally released as a substitute beer for their Brown Shugga release due to capacity issues in their brewery, but because of its popularity, Lagunitas releases Sucks as its own annual release now. Lagunitas Sucks has 7.85% Alcohol By Volume and is available in 6 packs and kegs.
Lagunitas Sucks is an amber colored beer, slightly hazy, with a fairly large, durable, creamy white head floating atop.
The nose is all about a very bright hop presentation, with citrus, grapefruit and hints of tropical fruit.
Just a bit of a pale malt backbone starts off the taste, hints of lighter fruit in the yeast transition, with the hops again completely dominating. Lightly floral and grassy, with plenty of citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit notes, and just a touch of a bitter pine to wind things up. The mouth is medium bodied and pretty actively carbonated.
There is a good reason that Lagunitas Sucks is so popular with lupalin addicts, as it is basically a hop juice elixir. It isn’t my favorite beer in its weight class, but it still is very tasting and worth picking up a sixer of each year.
