Base for Recipe to make a perfect Newcastle Brown mimic, September 19, 2013

Munton Connoisseurs kits are above average quality kits. Used as is, with either corn sugar or un-hopped dry malt extract, this kit will yield a very decent brown ale. I use it as the base for my recipe to mimic Newcastle Brown Ale (my favourite beer)by adding crystal malt and using a light dried spray malt extract instead of sugar. Light liquid malt extract also works. The result is so close to the real thing that most people trying it can’t tell the difference.

My local suppliers tell me they can no longer get the Connoisseurs Nut Brown Ale, only Munton’s Brown Ale kit, which, while still a good kit, is inferior to the Nut Brown kit. Amazon may have saved my favourite recipe!!!

Could potentially yield a quality brew if I knew what the hell I was doing. Definitely recommend for a beginner to homebrewing. The only advice from experience I can give is: ignore the directions provided where it says to use cane sugar in the wort. Use malt extract for that portion and then use corn sugar when bottling. Using cane sugar makes it taste cidery, and you’ll end up with a little over 2 cases of off tasting beer, unless that’s what you’re going for.
