As I noted the other day in my review of New Belgium Cigar City Collaboration, there are a couple of new releases in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith series. Tonight I will be checking out the second one, which is a Dubbel with 8% Alcohol By Volume that goes by the name of New Belgium Wild2. Wild2 utilizes a berry called Shisandra.
New Belgium Wild2 Dubbel is a dark brown colored beer with purplish hues, which glows a bright ruby red when held up to a light. A medium sized khaki head floats atop, leaving a nice amount of lacing on the glass.
The nose is centered on a peppery Trappist yeast, bubble gum hues, with some herbal and fruity notes lingering in the background.
The yeast is prominent in the taste as well, musty, peppery, farmhouse, berries, plenty of continental malts accented with caramel, with herbal and grassy hops rounding it out. The mouth is medium bodied and moderately carbonated with a dry finish.
New Belgium Wild2 Dubbel is a nice take on a classic style, largely sticking within the traditional Belgian parameters, but adding some new flavors with the Shisandra. Wild2 probably isn’t for the masses, but fans of traditional Belgian style beers should find it to be quite tasty.
