Pour Decisions Maroon and Bold Beer Review

Within a few minutes of where I work is a small local brewery called Pour Decisions, and until today I have never seen any of their beers in bottles. As I was picking up some scotch for the annual Holiday Booze Exchange party that my friends throw every year, I noticed a bomber of Pour Decisions Maroon and Bold in a bomber next to the counter. Maroon and Bold is an American Double IPA with 7.5% Alcohol By Volume, and is named after the colors of the University of Minnesota (maroon and gold). I have had a couple of growlers of their beer, so it will be interesting to see how they translate to a bottle format.

Pour Decisions Maroon and Bold is a brown colored beer, glowing a mildly hazy mahogany when held up to a light source. A small off white head tops it off, with a bit of lacing here and there on the glass.

The nose has some caramel malts, but is mainly focused on a hop presentation, spanning floral, citrus, grapefruit and some resinous pine.

Caramel and brown malts start off the taste, lightly toasted, with lighter fruit notes in the transition, apples and pears, with the hops starting floral and grassy, moving through grapefruit, with resinous notes providing a nice amount of bitterness in the finish. The mouth is a touch fuller than medium bodied and smoothly carbonated.

Pour Decisions was going for a maroon colored beer, so the malt profile is a bit darker than your traditional IPA, but the hefty amount of hops will be familiar to fans of the style. I am assuming that Maroon and Bold isn’t widely distributed at this time, but my local readers will be pleased to try it out if they come across a bottle.
