A great reference book, but questionable rating system, October 23, 2013

If you like local beers and have a drinking knowledge of their various styles you’ll find this book an excellent guide to San Diego County’s burgeoning craft beer breweries and tasting facilities. Dividing the 70-plus venues among seven regions of the county, the 108-page eBook includes a table of contents, an index, and a map for each chapter, making it a convenient reference for readers hunting down their favorite brews.

Changing some formatting could improve the book’s accessibility, and since it’s a Kindle edition, it wouldn’t be hard to fix them at KDP.

    1. The venues are listed by name alphabetically within each region, rather than by city or neighborhood, inconveniencing readers searching for breweries by city or neighborhood within a region.
    2. The row of scores ranking “beer quality,” “service,” “setting” and “location” is listed at the end of each venue’s description, with no space separating it from the next facility’s description. On the small Kindle screen a reader can easily misread which scores belong to which venue. Creating more space to separate the scores from the following listing would reduce confusion. Better yet, placing the scores within the listing itself would remove the confusion entirely.

There’s a more serious problem with the ratings themselves. A high score of 50 for beer quality implies a precision that calls for more definition than simply “consistency,” as Hernandez defines quality. The author claims “taste” is too subjective to rate. But how about appearance, aroma, palate and flavor? The only time he mentions those is when he gives the beer an exceptionally high or low rating. But what’s the difference between 43 and 46 quality? A simpler ten-point system, with clear definitions for each level would be preferable for this beer drinker.

Why and how is “Location” scored? It appears to apply only to breweries with multiple sites. Maybe I missed it, but I could find no explanation of the rating scale for location and how it figures in the overall score. The ranking of breweries by overall score in the book’s index is heavily biased toward the larger venues–apparently because those with multiple sites get high scores for “location.”

The most useful aspect of the book were the maps and description of the settings. But without more explanation of how quality is judged, I wouldn’t put too much faith in the author’s ratings.

I’m giving the book three stars–a great reference to find local breweries, their service and settings, and the styles of beer they serve, but disappointing in the reliability of its ratings.

Glitchy on my older kindle, skips around. Good maps and area-of-town organization, but hard to jump to “main location” for real review. Not much content for the price.
