Southern Tier Brewing Company has one of the more popular pumpkin beers in their Pumking, and this year they added another pumpkin offering to their fall line. It is an American Imperial Stout with 8.6% Alcohol By Volume (ABV) called Southern Tier Warlock.
Southern Tier Warlock is a black bodied beer, which admits a mahogany glow when held up to a light source. A medium sized khaki colored head tops its off, with an extensive sheet of lacing clinging to the glass.
Cookie bread crust stands out in the nose, with black malts, pumpkin and associated spices as well.
Black and caramel malts start off the taste, but the flavor is focused on the “Pumking-esque” flavor profile, pumpkin, nutmeg, hints of cinnamon, pie crust and a dab of whipped cream. The mouth is fairly full bodied and smoothly carbonated.
Southern Tier Pumking was notable to me because it managed to get all of the flavors from a pumpkin pie into the beer, and they are attempting to recreate that experience with Warlock. I would say they succeeded, but I would also like a more complex base beer, and the stout aspects get overwhelmed. Maybe a touch of chocolate malt or a slightly fuller black malt profile would take it to the next level. That said, Southern Tier Warlock is worth a look for any fan of pumpkin ales.
