The Unchained Series of beers, a line of limited release beers from Summit Brewing Company, is now on its 14th edition, which is a Biere de Garde with 7.3% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). Biere de Garde isn’t a style that you run into every day, so it is nice to find another example to try out.
Summit Biere de Garde is a clear, mahogany colored beer, which shines a ruby red when held up to a light. A nice-sized khaki colored head tops it off, leaving a web of lacing behind on the glass.
The nose is mainly toasty and bready malts with hints of chocolate and darker fruits lingering in the background.
The malts take center stage in the taste as well, with toasty notes mingling with continental varieties, followed by some nice fruity esters in the middle of the spectrum, rounded out with just a bit of a leafy hop in the finish. The mouth is fairly full bodied and smoothly carbonated.
Summit Biere de Garde is a very easy drinking beer, especially given its size, and anyone needing a little break from the constant barrage of hops in American beers these days will welcome the change of pace that this beer provides. Biere de Garde is good enough that I will probably pick up another six pack before its run ends.
