If by “Beer Lover”, you mean “Bud Light Lover”…, December 28, 2011

I received this book for Christmas from a very well meaning friend. I’m a home brewer, a BJCP beer judge and currently really getting into good cooking… so the title of this book probably led her to believe it would be perfect for me. At first, I had high hopes.

After looking through about 2/3 of the recipes (and that’s all the book is, just recipes and quotes about beer), all of the recipes look pretty weak. For instance, I haven’t found one recipe that specifies a kind of beer to use in the recipe. It just says “beer”. A deep, roasty, chocolaty stout? A grassy, grapefruit-like, bitter IPA? An intensely sour Berliner Weisse? What does this recipe want from me?? The only distinction made regarding beer is mentioning that a recipe should include “light beer” as opposed to “beer”. The author makes more distinction between the mustards and cheeses than he does in the beer choice in this “beer lovers” cookbook.

Also, most of the additions of beer in the recipe seem like an afterthought. One recipe I spotted for crab cakes called for “2 tablespoons of beer”. Why even bother?

It’s like having a book titled “Cheese Lover’s Cookbook” and having every recipe call for just “cheese”. It’s very disappointing.

I got this book as a gift for my 21st birthday because I love to cook, and have been shopping around for some new, good beers. I looked through the recipes and tried a few, and let me say that this is an awesome book for anyone who enjoys cooking and the versatility of beer. With over 300 recipes, I found something for literally every occasion where I could want to show off my culinary expertise and love of beer. It’s a great gift or guide for any level of cooking experience – not to mention the hilarious anecdotes about breweries and beer!
