Fun, quick superhero read, September 11, 2011

Winslow, whose book Mug Shot I’d previously read, delivers another superhero semi-parody. Dave’s life isn’t going so well: His shrew of a wife is in jail for embezzlement, he’s practically broke, hates his job as a medical devices salesman, and Mr. Cox, a crimelord, is looking to personally recoup the losses from Dave’s wife’s company. In Dave’s corner? Liza, an Amazon of a roller-derby-ist and bike courier recently released from prison for assault, Jean, a homosexual make-up artist, and Dave’s innate ability to control the temperature of tea.

Set in New Zealand, the world-building is adequate, but what book excels in portraying the weaknesses and strengths of the very human characters. The plot is quick, fun and funny, with a satisfying conclusion. Limited proofreading issues were not distracting. Overall, an entertaining read, which approaches limited superpowers in a clever way.

Note: I read the Smashwords version.

This book was a lot of fun mainly because, like another reviewer said, the characters were so likeable and entertaining. Dave, a nondescript medical supply salesman who has one minor superpower (yes, involving tea), joins up with an unlikely pair of new friends to take down a bad guy who is after him. The story was completely implausible but still very entertaining. Dave’s wife, a former CEO, is in prison for embezzlement and one of the stockholders, a very bad guy who lost money when her company went down because of her, is after Dave to get his money back. Dave meets Liza when he misses his bus after a prison visit with his wife. Liza is a tough lesbian roller derby queen who was just released for assault. Liza offers him a ride and that’s where the real fun starts. It was just a pleasure to watch the relationship build between Liza and Dave; two people who would never have normally have met or become friends. Then Jean joins in, a funny outrageous gay guy who helps with disguises and such. These unlikely friends empower each other and try to resolve the problems with the bad guys.

One thing I really liked is that it was such a light read. Not a lot of violence, even with the action and adventure. This author manages exciting plot action and good vs. bad guys without intensity or blood and guts. Well done!

I really hope there’s a sequel with more adventures of Dave, Liza and Jean.

This was a very well-written book with an interesting and unusual premise. The superpower was worked seamlessly into the story. I can’t believe it was available for nothing.
