Tyranena Brewing Company has been distributing here in Minnesota for a number of years now, but I haven’t made it through their entire line of beers yet. Tonight I will check out one which I don’t recall having before, which is an American Brown Ale with 5.75% Alcohol By Volume called Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge. A portion of each batch of Rocky’s Revenge is aged on oak barrels.
Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge is a deep brown colored beer, which glows a pretty clear copper color when held up to a light. Some microscopic particulate matter is suspended throughout the body, and a short-lived tan colored head floats atop.
The nose is mainly caramel malts, accented with vanilla and hints of bourbon.
The bourbon barrels pick up a bit of strength in the taste, nicely complementing the caramel malts, hints of chocolate, with earthy hops rounding things out. The mouth is a bit fuller than medium bodied and pretty smoothly carbonated.
Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge demonstrates that not every bourbon barrel aged beer has to be overly complex, as it is a pretty straightforward beer. Nice and drinkable with a pretty nice taste, Rocky’s Revenge should please any fan of brown ales.
