It has been awhile since the last time I had a new beer from Victory Brewing Company, but tonight I will be checking out their new American Double IPA with 8.7% Alcohol By Volume called Victory DirtWolf. I have been hearing pretty good things about this beer from people who have already tried it out, so I am looking forward to popping the top.
Victory DirtWolf is a gold colored beer, mildly hazy golden colored beer, sporting a medium sized, bubbly white head. Lots of lacing remains behind on the glass.
The nose has a touch of sweet malt, but is mainly focused on a very fruity hop presentation; lots of tropical fruits, accented with citrus and grapefruit.
The balance towards the hops remains in the taste, with sweet pale malts providing just enough of a base to support the hops. Starting floral, grapefruit, lots of tropical fruits, with a touch of resinous pine rounding things out. Alcohol spice does show up a little bit, but is overall well-blended. Lots of carbonation in the mouth with a medium body.
The trend these days for hoppy IPAs and Imperial IPAs has been less of an intense bitterness, and more of a focus on late-boil flavor and aroma additions, and Victory DirtWolf continues in that vein. With Citra taking center stage, and other fruity varieties playing supporting roles, hop heads will certainly enjoy DirtWolf.
